The 2nd Steering Committee Meeting of the National Program for the Control of Transboundary

 Animal Diseases in the Arab Region


The 2nd Steering Committee Meeting of the National Program for the Control of Transboundary Animal Diseases in the Arab Region was inaugurated on Wednesday, 18 July 2018 at the headquarters of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) in Khartoum, Sudan, under the patronage of the Sudanese Minister of Animal Resources H.E Mr. Bushara Jumaa Aror.

The meeting was chaired by H.E Prof. Ibrahim Adam El Dukheri. The participants in the meeting were; the Representative of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development H.E Dr. Abdul Redha Bahman, the Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Mr. Babagana Ahmed, the Representative of the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa Mr. Abdul-Aziz Al-Mahmoudi, the Representative of the Director-General of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) Mr. Bengoumi's, the Regional Director of OIE Regional Office for the Middle East Dr. Mohammad Ghazi Yahya, the Representative of the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) Mr. Stephane Renaudim, the Representative of the European Commission for the Control of Foot-and-Mouth Disease (Eu-FMD) Dr. Keith Sumption, and representatives of 15 Arab countries from Jordan, Bahrain, Tunisia, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Oman, Iraq, Palestine, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Egypt, the United Moon and Yemen.

H.E Prof. El Dukheri pointed out that in collaboration with regional and international development organizations and institutions, AOAD has implemented several projects in support of the member countries in the control of animal epidemics and programs aimed at addressing these threats. These efforts are summarized in the implementation of joint development projects aimed at supporting beneficiary countries, through the provision of the necessary technical expertise, and the provision of work requirements, which include diagnostic and control equipment and programs and awareness and guidance programs. In addition the ongoing training national cadres working in the fields of diagnosis, control and alarm. As well as a number of studies and consultations on ways to combat these diseases and pests were carried out with the significant contribution of development funding institutions, represented in the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development. H.E Mr Aror, praised the efforts exerted by AOAD in the conservation of livestock and food security in the Arab region. He also stressed that the widespread spread of transboundary animal diseases in the Arab region and the African continent is a threat to wealth and food security of the two regions. As these diseases have negative effects on the Arab and international trade and the consequent of heavy economic losses and addressing these problems and threats comes in AOAD’s mandate and leadership role in promoting food security and sustainable development.

In conclusion, H.E Prof. El Dukheri renewed the contribution of the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development and the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development for their support to AOAD’s efforts in sustainable development and conservation of livestock in the Arab world. He hoped that the work in this field would continue with international and regional counterpart organizations and that Arab and non-Arab funding institutions would contribute to financing the next stages.

The meeting was held in the context of following up and implementing the components and activities of this program in its second year, proposing the third year plan, the timetable and the budget required for its implementation.
