Training Course in the field of Means to Confront and Control Common Diseases

 (Foot-and-Mouth Disease - Avian Influenza)


The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) held a training course in the field of "Means to Confront and Control Common Diseases (Foot- and-Mouth Disease - Avian Influenza)", on 8-12 July 2018 in Cairo, Egypt. The participants were 22 veterinarians from various research laboratories at the Agricultural Research Center and the Animal Health Research Institute.

 The course aimed to introduce the trainees with the importance of common diseases, classification according to pathogenic, transmission methods, economic importance of endemic foot-and-mouth disease in all Arab countries, diagnosis and response in the case of epidemics, prevention and immunization. Moreover, methods of control to eliminate the spread of the disease and to familiarize trainees with quality systems and biosecurity in farms and laboratories and how to apply and avoid the risks that may arise, and ways to deal with the causes of the disease.

The training course included a general introduction on common diseases and the role of the Animal Health Institute in diagnosing and confronting them. The course tackled the biosecurity systems on farms with the application of laboratory quality systems, epidemiology of foot and mouth disease "as a model of transboundary diseases”, laboratory applications on isolation methods and viral classification. Methods of diagnosing FMD infection by ELISA test. Methods of evaluating vaccines in vaccinated animals with practical applications on serological tests to detect antibodies against HBV FMD and bird flu. Practical applications for preparing samples, using modern techniques in the diagnosis of the disease and virus isolation, classification and control with reference to the field evaluation of vaccines tracking the genetic sequence of the virus.
