Dr. Tariq Moosa Al-Zadjali, the Director-General of the Arab
Organization for Agriculture Development (AOAD) has
participated in The World Summit on Food Security ,
organized by FAO in Rome from 16-18 November 2009. H. E was
accompanied by a delegation comprising Dr. Salah Abdel Gadir
– In charge of food security department, Eng. Raed Hattar
– Head of D. G office.
The summit was attended by many world leaders
and head of states. They adopted a declaration pledging
renewed commitment to eradicate hunger from the face of the
earth at the earliest date. Countries also agreed to work to
reverse the decline in domestic and international funding
for agriculture and promote new investment in the sector.
They undertake to improve governance of global food issues
and face the challenges of climate changes to food security.
H. E Ban Ki-Moon – the Secretary General of
the United Nations addressed the summit describing the food
crisis of today as a wake–up call for tomorrow. He
emphasized the deep inter-connection between food security
and climate change. He specified the job of the gathering in
not just to feed the hungry but to empower the hungry to
feed themselves.
On the other hand the Director General
of FAO Dr. Jacques Diouf, warned, in his speech before the
summit, that the issue of hunger seems to be waning as other
issues are coming to the fore font of the international
agenda "although all the heavy clouds that led to the
previous crisis are again accumulating in the skies". The
number of the hungry has reached one billion people, i.e.
105 million more than in 2008. He described this as a tragic
achievement in those modem days when our technology allows
us to travel to the moon.
The summit was further addressed by a
number of world leaders.
H. E the D. G of AOAD availed the summit to
meet with many Ministers and directors of international and
regional organizations to discuss the summit agenda as well
as issues of mutual concern especially those relating to
achieving joint partnership to combat poverty and bridge the
existing food gap.
