The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information. We help developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices and ensure good nutrition for all. Since our founding in 1945, we have focused special attention on developing rural areas, home to 70 percent of the world's poor and hungry people.

The International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), a specialized agency of the United Nations, was established as an international financial institution in 1977 as one of the major outcomes of the 1974 World Food Conference. The Conference was organized in response to the food crises of the early 1970s that primarily affected the Sahelian countries of Africa. The conference resolved that "an International Fund for Agricultural Development should be established immediately to finance agricultural development projects primarily for food production in the developing countries". One of the most important insights emerging from the conference was that the causes of food insecurity and famine were not so much failures in food production, but structural problems relating to poverty and to the fact that the majority of the developing world’s poor populations were concentrated in rural areas.

Established in 1977, the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) is one of the 15 centers strategically located all over the world and supported by the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). With its main research station and offices based in Aleppo, Syria, ICARDA works through a network of partnerships with national, regional and international institutions, universities, non-governmental organizations and ministries in the developing world; and with advanced research institutes in industrialized countries

أُسِس المركز العربي لدراسات المناطق الجافة والأراضي القاحلة ( أكساد ) في عام 1968 في دمشق بالجمهورية العربية السورية . وهو منظمة عربية متخصصة تعمل ضمن إطار جامعة الدول العربية ، بهدف توحيد الجهود القومية لتطوير البحث العلمي الزراعي في المناطق الجافة وشبه الجافة وتبادل المعلومات والخبرات على نحو يمكِّن من الاستفادة من ثمار التقدم العلمي ونقل وتطوير وتوطين التقانات الزراعية الحديثة بغية زيادة الإنتاج الزراعي في هذه المناطق

In 1981, a Near East Regional Conference was organized by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which passed a resolution requesting action to establish such a regional Centre. CARDNE was launched following a 1983 FAO-sponsored meeting of representatives and observers from 18 Near Eastern states, also attended by observers from the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Program. The agreement to establish CARDNE came into effect in 1987 after it was ratified by six countries. The Regional Centre on Agrarian Reform and Rural Development for the Near East (CARDNE) was established to address the needs, rights and aspirations of the rural populations of the Near East

It offers a two-way bridge amongst sub national, national, regional and international statistics on food and agriculture.
