The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development Celebrated the Arab Agriculture Day


The Arab Organization for Agricultural Development celebrated on Thursday the 27th of September 2018 the Arab Agriculture Day Under the theme “Smart agriculture is a better future for Arab agriculture and natural resources conservation”. The celebration was attended by a number of Arab Ministers of Agriculture, Arab Ambassadors in Khartoum, representatives of Agriculture Arab Ministries and Arab and Regional Organizations.

H.E Prof Ibrahim Adam El Dukheri the Director General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD), stressed the need to achieve Arab food security, pointing out that the value of food gap in the Arab world exceeded 30 billion dollars annually, which requires more efforts to increase the contribution of local agricultural production. Moreover, he pointed out the challenges facing the agricultural sectors. The most important of which are climate change, reliance on traditional patterns of production, lack of water resources and insufficient investments at the sector.

H.E Prof El Dukheri stressed the political will of the Arab countries to remove the obstacles and overcome the difficulties through the adoption by many Arab countries of a clear agricultural policy to promote the agricultural sector. As well as many promising initiatives launched by Arab countries such as the initiative of the Sudanese president H.E Field Marshal Omar AL Bashir to achieve the Arab food security.

 H.E Prof El Dukheri added that the AOAD in the past four centuries supported the efforts of the member countries in this field by providing support in the areas of work assigned by its’ legislative bodies. AOAD implemented regional and national projects in the fields of; studies, reports and human resources development. Moreover, AOAD cooperated with Arab and international organizations and centers aiming to enhance Arab agricultural development.

H.E Prof El Dukheri stressed the continuation of AOADs’ efforts in supporting national plans as well as linking the regional and international partners concerned with agriculture and food security issues in the Arab region.

H.E Prof El Dukheri pointed out a number of initiatives to develop and modernize the work of AOAD to be more responsive to the aspirations of its member countries. As well as increasing opportunities for self-financing through the implementation of contractual studies in the African continent, promoting the use of the AOAD’s communication technology, bringing it closer to the member countries and making its efforts more visible in Arab countries.

H.E Prof El Dukheri pointed to theme of the Arab Agriculture Day linking it with the 1st Inter- Regional Smart Agriculture Forum (ISAF 2018), which was concluded on Wednesday, 26/9/2018 in Khartoum. H.E stressed the importance of the technical direction of agriculture in the Arab region in line with the global trends in this field, pointing out that the agricultural technology imposed itself on the Arab region in light of the high population growth rates and climate change and the increase in the production costs.

H.E Prof El Dukheri called for the adoption of smart agricultural technologies in Arab agriculture as one of the most important alternatives to overcome the obstacles facing agricultural development in the Arab countries. He said that such technologies allow better management and exploitation of agricultural resources to ensure higher production and productivity and resource sustainability for future generations. He also highlighted the importance of Arab youth participation in agricultural development through the implementation of effective programs to guide and equip Arab youth for agricultural entrepreneurship to serve sustainable agricultural development in the Arab world.

H.E Eng Hassab Al Nabi Musa the Sudanese Minister of Agriculture and Forestry welcomed the participants and congratulated the participants on the occasion of this Arab agricultural feast. He expressed his support for AOAD and his sincere thanks and appreciation to its Director General H.E Prof El Dukheri. Noting the advantage of Sudan by hosting AOAD which was represented in the projects and programs implemented in the country, adding that it is the pleasure of Sudan to host AOAD headquarters.

 The audience were addressed also by, the Egyptian Deputy Minister for Animal Resources and Fisheries and Poultry H.E Dr Mona Mehrez , the Mauritanian Minister of Agriculture H.E Ms Lemina Mint El Gotob and H.E the Moroccon Ambassador in Sudan Mohamed Moaalainin.

They stressed the need to adopt modern technologies in Arab agricultural development and the need to continue the efforts to achieve Arab food security, noting the important role played by the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development in the service of its member countries.

There was a number of honoring on the sidelines of the ceremony to; the Jordanian Minister of Agriculture and the President of the General Assembly of AOAD H.E Eng. Khalid Al Hanifat, , the Egyptian Deputy Minister for Animal Resources and Fisheries and Poultry H.E Dr Mona Mehrez and the Mauritanian Minister of Agriculture H.E Ms Lemina Mint El Gotob. The honoring came for their effective participation in the 1st Inter- Regional Smart Agriculture Forum (ISAF 2018) and their endless support to AOAD. The former Assistant Director General H.E Dr. Ahmed Abdul Waly Al Samawi was also honored for his efforts exerted to ensure the success of all the activities of AOAD which were entrusted to him during his term in the AOAD from 1/8/2010 to 31/7/2018.

In addition, the celebration included a workshop on the applications of smart agriculture in achieving food security and natural resources conservation, which contained many scientific papers in the applications of smart agriculture in the animal and fish sector. Moreover, successful models and experiments in the field of smart agriculture in the Arab region were presented.
