H.E Prof. Al-Dukhiri Participates in the

Inauguration of the new

Headquarters of CARDA


H.E Prof. Ibrahim Adam El Dukhiri, Director-General of the Arab Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD), participated in the opening ceremony of the new office of the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA) in Egypt on the 29th of October 2017. The opening ceremony was also attended by H.E Dr. Adil El Beltagy Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, former Director General of ICARDA, Dr. Mahmoud Abu Zeid former Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Hussein Al-Atfi former Minister of Water Resources, Dr. Abdel Salam Ould Ahmed Regional Director for the Near East and North Africa, and Mr. Atir Hanoura Director General of the Egyptian Countryside Development Company.

H.E Mr. Ali Abu Sabaa the Director General of the Center, said in his speech, that ICARDA's contributed in finding suitable solutions to some agricultural problems, especially those associated with the challenges of high temperature and the lack of water resources. He added that ICARDA has a long and fruitful partnership with Egypt which contributed in the agricultural sector in Egypt.

In his speech, H.E Prof. El Dukhiri explained that the organization is preparing a new strategy for the coming years. It will be based on building partnerships with international institutions and organizations to achieve sustainable development. Stressing the importance of activating the global partnership according to the 17th goal of the SDGs 2030. He added that the AOAD works harmoniously and closely with the FAO and ICARDA.

"ICARDA's transition to Egypt is a strategic option that complements its research programs in other parts of the region, and Egypt provides opportunities in the field of water resources management for arid regions," said Margaret Thalwitz, Board Chair, Chair, Executive and Finance Committee.

In his speech, and on behalf of the Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation, Dr. Mahmoud Madani, Director General welcomed ICARDA's decision to expand its operations in Egypt. He pointed out that it is an international organization aimed at reducing poverty, supporting food and water security, promoting the sustainable use of natural agricultural resources, increasing productivity of land per area unit and increasing self-sufficiency for strategic agricultural crops.
